There is a lot of salt in the ocean water, warm temperature and oxygen can cause much faster corrosion than other buildings which are not in direct exposure to such elements. When the rebar is damaged it can no longer have contact with concrete and this can cause dangerous conditions for buildings who are compromised. When an extreme event happens like Hurricanes, Wind or Earthquakes. In the case of the surfside condos, the structure was in a stage where it didn’t even require a major event to trigger a collapse. When the rebar corrodes it expands. Sometimes it expands up to 7 times more than its original size. Just a little bit of rebar corrosion can cause the concrete to crack. The solution is to stop the process of corrosion. When we do the inspection look into the concrete quality and see if the thickness of the concrete is enough for the building to carry the loads.

What’s the difference between a Structural Inspection and Normal Home Inspection?
It is sad to learn that not all buildings are habitable & some buildings have so many structural defects that they can collapse at any time.
